3 Questions to Ask All Physician Assistants

When hiring new physician assistants for your practice, there are a lot of variables to keep in mind. To be sure, educational and professional backgrounds can play a huge role in how likely a candidate is to succeed, but just because a PA looks good on paper doesn’t mean that he or she has the qualities that you’re looking for. At Odyssey Staffing, our experts know how to accurately evaluate potential candidates. Here are the top three questions that should be asked of all physician assistants during the interview process for a permanent position.

Why Did You Want to Be a PA?

Even though this question is one of the most basic, many hiring managers forget to ask it. Asking a candidate why they became a physician’s assistant gets to the heart of what motivates them on a daily basis, and it gives candidates a chance to showcase their passion for the job. If you’re dealing with a PA who has a warm bedside manner and excellent people skills, then they’ll be able to ace this question without thinking twice.

Have You Ever Had Differences with a Colleague?

Workplace disagreements are common in any profession, but in the medical field, they can greatly hinder patient care. Given how important it is to have a cohesive team, you need to learn how PA candidates deal with personal conflicts. So ask about past differences that they may have had with a colleague and, in particular, listen to how effectively those conflicts were resolved. Ideally, you want to find a PA who is capable of putting personal disagreements aside for the betterment of the team.

What Would You Do in the Event of X?

Patient care requires you to think on your feet. So if you want to test the ability of candidates to improvise and stay focused under pressure, then give them a hypothetical scenario that they might encounter while working for your practice. If a candidate is able to calmly work through a given problem in the interview, then there is a higher chance that they’ll be able to work through high-stress problems when they crop up on the job.
